Match Notes
*Written from my -Adam's - perspective in first person for simplicity - Thurs 8/4 - sorry for the length :) High Level: it was insanely hot, we both battled hard with long rallies, moon balls, powerful winners, and lots of fun despite the heat exhaustion! It's been 22 hours and I think I'm finally recovering. (Really) Detailed: Where to start... we got to Mill Pond at 9 and the courts were already ablaze in the summer sun. I lathered up with sunscreen but after a solid warmup (where Eli was hitting harder than our previous matches) was soaked in sweat rather than sun lotion. We then started strong, trading holds, but Eli broke for 3-2 by kicking things into another gear. That got me laser-focused and energized enough to battle through tough rallies and long games somehow to take the next 4 games for a 1-set lead. We took a few minutes for extra hydration and a reprieve in the limited available shade before heading back into the inferno. I hit a crushing forehand winner after a few good shots to open the second set, thinking I could take my momentum further. Eli had other ideas (though he later admitted he wasn't feeling up to the challenge after that first point of the set).. he held from 15-40, then broke me after I fought from 15-40 to multiple deuces, and then held from 40-15 after I sent his service game to multiple deuces. I finally got into the set and we traded holds, which left me later down 15-40 again in my service game at 1-4 feeling like I was the one that needed to throw in the towel. The heat was making me nearly delirious despite the constant between-game hydration. I'm still not sure how but I tried to slow the game down and go for lines instead of power. Despite many more lengthy rallies, incredible shots and gets, droppers and lobs, and grueling games, I suddenly found myself serving for the match at 5-4. Again, Eli had other plans, breaking me to 30 and then holding to 30, showing true nerve and grit with great rally balls and consistency. Now serving to stay in the set and get us to a breaker, I found hidden reserves (and solid serves) to hold to 15 for 6-6. I then went into heat-exhausted Zen mode, channeling my recent tiebreak experience and learnings from the previous week's match against Neil to go up 6-0 before the change of sides. Finally, after a morning of whiffing, mis-hitting, and missing overheads, I hit solid serve, solid approach, and absolutely pummeled a smash with a freeing yell as I put the ball and match away. Eli and I shook hands, traded weary headshakes and laughs, and headed inside the AC'd clubhouse building only to find that despite hand-washing and toweling off, we couldn't stop sweating. Eli - thanks again for an amazing match - I hope you're doing ok today... I drank 3 gallons of water and had 2 lunches just to survive yesterday - looking forward to another match soon!
